Best Zotero Plugins 2026
A 2026 Zotero plugin setup guide for beginners: six recommended tools for collecting papers, AI-assisted reading, translation, notes, and citations.
Search for Zotero plugins and you will find plenty of “must-have” lists. But if you are just getting started with reference management, a more useful question is: where is my research workflow getting stuck?
If you want to save papers from the web to your library, start with Zotero Connector. If you write in Word, first make sure the official citation plugin works. Add tools for reading, translation, note organization, or LaTeX only as you need them.
This guide to the best Zotero plugins in 2026 covers six tools across the workflow of collecting, reading, taking notes, and writing. They solve different problems; you do not need to install them all.
About this article
This article is written by the BibGenie team, and BibGenie is our product. Our descriptions of third-party tools draw on official documentation, project information, and release notes. This is neither a benchmark conducted in a controlled test environment nor a paid ranking. If you have other recommendations, we welcome your feedback by email.
At a glance: which Zotero plugin do you need?
| Tool | Main purpose | Where it is installed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zotero Word plugin | Insert citations, generate bibliographies, and change citation styles in Word | Included with Zotero Desktop; integrates with Word | Researchers who write in Word |
| Zotero Connector | Save bibliographic information and available attachments from the browser | Browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Edge | Anyone who regularly collects references online |
| BibGenie | Chat with papers, discover research, and help organize your library | Zotero Desktop plugin | Researchers who want an AI assistant inside Zotero |
| Better BibTeX | Manage citation keys and improve BibTeX / BibLaTeX exports | Zotero Desktop plugin | LaTeX and Markdown writers |
| Zotero PDF Translate | Translate selected text, annotations, and certain bibliographic fields while reading | Zotero Desktop plugin | Readers working with foreign-language literature |
| Better Notes | Organize knowledge with note links, templates, and Markdown synchronization | Zotero Desktop plugin | Researchers building reading notes or connecting external note-taking tools |
One distinction matters: the Word plugin and Connector are official Zotero tools; the other four are third-party desktop plugins. Their download sources and installation methods differ. Not every extension is installed from an .xpi file. Zotero's plugin documentation and download page distinguish these categories.
1. Zotero Word plugin: let Zotero manage citations and bibliographies
Best for: anyone writing papers, reports, or a thesis in Microsoft Word.
If you search for zotero plugin for word, you usually want Zotero's official word processor integration. It comes with Zotero Desktop and normally installs automatically. You do not need an additional third-party Word plugin. Official installation instructions
What does it do?
The Zotero toolbar in Word lets you insert or edit in-text citations, generate a bibliography, and change citation styles through the document settings. Citations remain linked to your library, so after correcting an author or year in Zotero, you can refresh the document. Official usage guide
For example, you might draft a paper using an author–date style, then need numbered citations for submission. Rather than rewriting each citation, change the document style in Zotero and check the target journal's specific requirements.
Its value lies in maintaining citation links. When a paper contains dozens of citations, adding or removing a reference or moving paragraphs should not mean maintaining bibliography numbers by hand.
How to install it and get started
Install and open Zotero Desktop.
Open a supported desktop version of Word and check for the Zotero toolbar.
Use Add/Edit Citation to insert your first citation, then Add/Edit Bibliography to generate the reference list.
If the toolbar is missing, close Word, open Zotero's Settings → Cite → Word Processors, and try installing or reinstalling the Word integration. Restart Word afterward. If it still fails, follow the official troubleshooting guide rather than repeatedly downloading installers from unfamiliar sources.
Word desktop requirements and citation-field limitations
Word citations require Zotero Desktop to be running; installing Connector alone is not enough. The plugin also will not automatically correct inaccurate authors, titles, or years in your library. Imported metadata still needs checking.
Unlink Citations removes the connection between document citations and Zotero. If a submission workflow requires plain text, first keep a copy of the document with its Zotero citation fields intact. Citation fields and unlinking
2. Zotero Connector: browser extension for Chrome and more
Best for: anyone regularly collecting references from publisher websites, databases, or search results.
Many people searching for zotero chrome extension are looking for Zotero Connector. This official browser extension saves references from web pages into Zotero; it is not an AI reading service in your browser. Official Connector overview
How is it different from downloading a PDF?
Downloading a PDF often gives you just a file. Connector attempts to save bibliographic information such as the title, authors, and publication details, together with attachments it can access. On supported results pages, a folder icon lets you select multiple references. Official guide to adding items
A useful habit is to save from the paper's publisher or database record page first, then check the metadata and attachments. Do not wait until you have dozens of similarly named PDFs before filling in authors and DOIs.
How do you install it?
Use the link for your browser on the official Zotero download page. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have dedicated extensions. Safari's Connector is bundled with Zotero and must be enabled in Safari's extension settings as instructed by Zotero.
For everyday use, opening Zotero Desktop before saving from the browser makes the workflow straightforward. Connector can also save to your online library when the desktop app is closed, after you authorize your account; the exact behavior depends on your settings. Connector usage
Full-text access and metadata checks
Saving a bibliographic record does not guarantee that you can download the full text. Website permissions, institutional access, and page support all affect attachment retrieval. Check that the authors, year, DOI, and PDF were saved, rather than closing the page as soon as you see a success message.
If you are starting with just one browser extension, Connector is usually the place to begin.
3. BibGenie: a Zotero AI plugin for research
Zotero and AI plugins
Note: Zotero itself does not provide AI features. BibGenie is a third-party plugin that brings AI capabilities into Zotero. It lets you ask questions about papers and notes, discover related research, and get help organizing your library.
Best for: researchers who already have papers and notes and want to use them for AI-assisted questions and research tasks.
BibGenie is an AI Research Agent that runs inside Zotero. Its role extends beyond sending a PDF to a model for summarization: you can ask questions about research materials, search your existing references, discover external research, and get help organizing your library.
Move from “what is this paper about?” to specific research questions
You can ask questions about the current paper and selected research materials. For example:
Try a question like this
Where did this study's sample come from? How did the authors define the primary outcome variable? Explain each separately and provide sources I can check.
Questions like this create a more verifiable reading task than “summarize the whole paper.” When an answer includes citations, you can follow them back to the sources. However, a traceable source does not automatically make an answer correct: you still need to check whether the original material supports the model's interpretation. Search your library and discover research beyond it
BibGenie supports library search and uses OpenAlex to discover related research outside your collection. The two fit together: first check what you have already collected, then look for studies worth adding.
Search scope matters here. The library's semantic index currently focuses on titles and abstracts. This does not mean that every PDF in your library has been semantically indexed in full. Reading a specific attachment and searching the entire library are distinct capabilities. Semantic indexing explained
For organization tasks, BibGenie can help with collections and tags, letting you review and approve relevant changes before they are written. If you also use an external note-taking workspace, you can authorize a Notion connection through Notion MCP to retrieve or update permitted workspace content during a paper conversation. This is different from continuous background, two-way synchronization.
Connect Zotero to external AI tools with MCP
If you are looking for Zotero MCP, BibGenie includes a local MCP server that lets compatible external AI clients access Zotero tools. Once enabled and configured in your client, it can support tasks such as searching items, reading PDF attachments and notes, and working with collections, tags, or metadata through the available tools.
This is separate from connecting BibGenie to Notion: the local MCP server exposes Zotero tools to an external client, while the Notion connection lets BibGenie access your authorized Notion workspace. If you only use BibGenie's in-plugin chat, you do not need to configure the local MCP server.
See the Zotero MCP guide for capabilities and the MCP settings guide to enable the server and connect a client. A local MCP endpoint does not, by itself, make a cloud model run locally; review your external client's data handling and model settings.
How to install it and get started
Get the plugin from the BibGenie download page, follow the three-step setup guide, and start with a familiar paper and one specific question.
Free credits and model configuration
You can try managed models without setting up your own API key first, or use your own model service or a local model as needed. The free plan includes 200 managed-model credits per month. Credits are not a count of questions; consumption depends on the model and task. See pricing for current allowances and plans, and the BYOK guide to configure your own key.
Model costs, privacy, and search scope
If you only need to insert citations in Word, the official plugin is more direct. If you only need a simple translation of a passage, a dedicated translation plugin may be a better fit. BibGenie is designed for tasks involving context, comparisons between studies, or multiple connected research steps.
When you use a cloud model, relevant research context must be sent to the selected service for processing. A local library therefore does not mean that all AI requests stay offline. Consider the nature of your materials and the service configuration when choosing a model.
4. Better BibTeX: citation tools for LaTeX and Markdown writers
Best for: anyone maintaining .bib files or writing in LaTeX or citation-enabled Markdown workflows.
Better BibTeX, usually shortened to BBT, focuses on citation keys and bibliographic exports. It connects Zotero with text-based writing tools.
Why might a LaTeX user need it?
In LaTeX, you might cite a source with \cite{smith2026example}; some Markdown workflows use [@smith2026example]. The identifier inside the braces or brackets is the citation key. As your library grows, consistent naming, collision avoidance, and export maintenance become important. Using citation keys
BBT can generate keys according to rules and offers export formats including Better BibTeX and Better BibLaTeX. A common approach is to create a collection for a writing project, export it as a .bib file, and reference that file from your writing tool.
What does automatic export handle?
Choose the appropriate Better export format and enable Keep updated to update a designated export file when your Zotero data changes. You then do not need to export manually each time you add or edit project references. Automatic export configuration
However, updating a local .bib file does not automatically synchronize it with Overleaf. You still need to configure how the cloud project receives that file, through a suitable transfer, version-control, or synchronization method.
Version changes to watch in 2026
BBT's official documentation notes that Zotero has a native citation-key field starting with Zotero 8. BBT has changed its storage and migration accordingly, so older instructions about “pinning” and “unpinning” keys no longer apply directly. The currently maintained branch also no longer supports Zotero 7. If you use an older Zotero version, check compatibility notes and historical releases first. Current migration and compatibility notes
Use the download link in the official BBT installation guide. If you only use Zotero's official Word citation features, you usually do not need BBT just to have a “complete” plugin setup.
5. Zotero PDF Translate: translate selected text where you read
Best for: readers whose main difficulties are foreign-language passages, technical terminology, or abstracts.
The project often called Zotero PDF Translate now uses the name Translate for Zotero. It brings translation into your Zotero reading workflow, reducing copying between PDFs, web translation tools, and notes. Official project overview
What is it best suited to?
The project supports translating selected text in PDFs, EPUBs, and web pages, as well as related translation features for annotations, titles, and abstracts. A practical starting point is to select a sentence you do not understand, read the translation, and check its meaning in context.
It is well suited to “what does this passage mean?” Comparing experimental designs across papers or investigating the evidence behind a conclusion requires a different kind of research tool. Translation and research Q&A can complement each other, but their outputs should not be treated as equivalent evidence.
How do you get started?
Download a package compatible with your Zotero version from the project's Releases page. After installation, set your target language and translation service, then test it on text that you can select normally.
Get one service working before configuring more features. Some services require your own API key or a paid account. Being able to download the plugin does not mean every underlying translation service is free. Release notes also document service adaptations and fixes; if an error occurs, check the plugin version and your selected service's configuration.
What to know before using it
Do not equate selected-text translation with automatically producing an entire bilingual PDF that preserves every aspect of the layout. For scans, first check that selectable text is available. For technical terms, negation, and statistical conclusions, continue checking against the original.
6. Better Notes: turn reading notes into reusable knowledge
Best for: researchers with accumulated annotations who want long-term research notes or a connection to Markdown note-taking tools.
The project's name is Better Notes, not Better Note. It extends Zotero's note-taking workflow with note links, templates, editing features, and exports. Official project overview
Move from individual excerpts to topic notes
After reading ten papers, the problem is often not a lack of notes but scattered information. Better Notes' links and templates help connect notes on individual papers with broader topic notes.
For example, you could create an overview note for a research topic and record each paper's question, methods, results, and limitations using a consistent structure. This is a suggested organization method, not a claim that the plugin automatically understands every paper or makes research judgments for you.
If you also use Obsidian or Markdown
Better Notes supports two-way synchronization between notes and external Markdown files, along with several export formats. Automatic synchronization requires configuration and does not happen instantly on every keystroke. Check compatibility with Obsidian's extended syntax as well. Synchronization and format notes
Test with a simple note first: export it from Zotero, edit it externally, synchronize it back, and check that links and formatting meet your needs before migrating important notes.
What to know before using it
The current project uses note tabs and windows for editing; the separate “workspace” interface shown in older tutorials has changed. AI-related functions also involve the relevant integrations and model configuration. Installing Better Notes is not equivalent to getting an unlimited, ready-to-use AI service.
Use the Better Notes releases page for installation and updates. If you only take occasional excerpts, learn Zotero's built-in notes first, then decide whether you need more sophisticated organization and synchronization.
Combine tools around your workflow, not a checklist
Writing in Word: make capture and citations reliable first
Start with Connector + the official Word plugin. One brings references into your library; the other brings citations into your manuscript. Complete the workflow of saving a paper, inserting a citation, and generating a bibliography before adding reading aids.
Add PDF Translate if foreign-language reading is difficult, or try BibGenie if you need to ask research questions. Evaluate these needs separately.
Writing in LaTeX or Markdown: check your citation file
Start with Connector + Better BibTeX and maintain a collection and export file for each project. First confirm that one citation key works in an actual manuscript, then configure automatic export and external file synchronization.
Long-term reading and reviews: distinguish inquiry from note-building
You can use BibGenie to ask follow-up questions about selected materials and check sources, then organize verified findings into notes. Consider Better Notes if you need topic links, templates, or a Markdown workflow.
This is a workflow suggestion based on the tools' purposes, not a claim that the two plugins have a dedicated one-click integration. Saving checked material as a Zotero note provides a clear handoff.
How do you install Zotero plugins? Distinguish these three cases
| Type | Where to start | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Official Word integration | Zotero Desktop and Settings → Cite → Word Processors | Confusing a browser extension with the Word plugin |
| Zotero Connector | The browser-specific link on Zotero's official download page | Trying to install a desktop .xpi in Chrome |
| Third-party desktop plugins | A compatible .xpi from the official project releases | Treating a source-code archive as an installer |
For a third-party .xpi, the usual process is to open Tools → Plugins in Zotero, click the gear menu, choose the option to install an add-on from a file, and select the downloaded package. Menu labels may vary by language and version. Official Zotero plugin installation instructions
Before updating, check which Zotero versions the plugin supports. Prefer compatible stable plugin releases for stable Zotero installations. Install one tool and verify your task before adding another; this also makes conflicts easier to isolate.
